It should come as no surprise that practice location is an important factor to consider when opening a new branch of your dental office. But is there such a thing as a perfect location? Naturally, there isn’t only one answer to this question, so let’s take a closer look at what factors patients value the most in the aspects of:
According to a survey, by the market research platform DentaVox, a large majority of patients prefer going to a dentist that is near their home, with a bit more than 50% of respondents choosing so. Second, with roughly 18% of answers, comes the option of the practice being near a place they visit regularly. These results indicate a trend that patients prefer visiting a dentist that is in their proximity, so picking an area with higher patient concentration is key. Is a large community better than a popular hotspot? That depends entirely on the patient segment you wish to attract.
Considering the fact that the majority of the population is nowadays located in urban areas the following insights should be quite obvious. Roughly 3 out of 4 respondents prefer their dentist being located in the city centre, or the downtown area. Does this mean that only centrally located practices get patients? Certainly not, however dental offices located there should expect that they will be catering to a specific community more than the general population of the city. There is a silver lining to it all though, as city neighbourhoods, outskirts, suburbs, and countryside based dentists will likely see less competition than ones in central areas.
As shown earlier, patients prefer to visit a dentist that is in their proximity. But what if that isn’t an option? The results of the DentaVox survey point out that the ideal travel time to the dentist should be a maximum of 30 minutes, with the bigger portion answering up to 15 minutes. This is certain to bring joy to practices not directly located within a specific community or the city centre, as it gives them leeway to cater to these populations even if located on the outskirts.
Beyond the City Limits
While travelling in general has seen a significant decline, during the Covid-19 epidemic, there is still a great deal of patients who are willing to travel to another city for a dental appointment, with about 45% of them willing to do so. This is especially true when it comes to dentists that bring something more to the table than the usual offerings of others.
So with this in mind, what are the most convincing arguments for patients to take up the journey to another city for a dentist appointment? It pretty much boils down to two main aspects – your specialty/experience and the cost of treatment. In other words, if you offer a significant upgrade for patients in these aspects, your practice will be able to cater to out-of-town patients just as well.
So now that you know more about what patients seek in terms of location are you considering establishing a branch at a new more desirable one?
